Character Information
Name: Shuichi Saihara
Canon: Danganronpa v3
Canon Point: Just before trial 6
Age: 16-17ish
History: Link
Personality: Shuichi was conceived by those who created his character as a "weak detective". He can come across as very unreliable at first glance, being a bit quiet and introverted as well as uncertain and self-deprecating. He's generally unconfident, frequently doubting himself, and he can be very passive, bending easily when pushed. He doesn't even like looking others in the eye, clinging to the security of a hat he could hide behind for the whole first chapter if the game.
However, under the timid exterior he does have a spine. While he tends to shrink back from conflict, even he has a point where he'll snap back, and he can have a very dry sense of humor when exasperated. He gets down about himself fairly easily, but he's pretty quick to defend others, judging people fairly and always giving them the benefit of the doubt. He comes across as being pretty serious, but a side effect of bending so easily is that he's a flexible person, able to handle all kind of shenanigans and horror relatively easily.
Ultimately, when he has other people to rely on, Shuichi can be extremely reliable himself. He's intelligent and observant and can solve mysteries and problems with ease, skills that serve him well both as a detective and in his dealings with others. As an apprentice detective, he specialized in mostly things like missing pets and infidelity cases with just one fluke of a solved murder, but he still pulls through and manages to work out all the murders in the killing game despite his relative inexperience, his lack of confidence, and his personal involvement with all the victims and killers. When times are tough, he can end up being the most dependable person of the group, with a level head and a rational, analytic manner of thinking in the worst of situations. In those dark times, he can be very sturdy and determined. He steadfastly tries to do what's right, believes in others wherever possible without letting that cloud his judgement, and works to overcome his own personal issues with the support of his friends.
At the core of Shuichi's character arc is his fear and doubts over whether it's always right to pursue the truth. As a detective, he feels this is a pathetic thing to worry about and he gets very down on himself about it, but he worries over things like whether people are happier not knowing the truth of some situations. He's repeatedly forced to confront this issue as the Killing Game forces him to uncover unpleasant truths for the sake of everyone's survival. Ultimately, with the support of his friends, he's decided to do his job as a detective to the best of his abilities, facing the truth whatever it may be and dealing with whatever might come of it, good or bad. Many times, he's the only one willing to look into a subject further, whether because everyone else is too set in their opinions or don't want to consider a potentially awful possibility. He's upset by the others accusing him of not trusting them or of wanting things to be as bad as he imagines, but he bears it all to make sure they uncover the truth and never holds anyone's lashing out at him against them.
Despite his often passive nature, Shuichi manages to get along with literally everyone if given enough of a chance. He can get rather wrapped up in his own worries and struggles and fail to notice when others are struggling too, but when he is paying attention he generally does his best to be a good friend. He's fairly easygoing and willing to go along with all kinds of nonsense if it isn't hurting anyone. He's patient, a good listener, and can put up with a lot of bullshit before getting really exasperated or angry. Even when dealing with people he doesn't really trust, he tries his best to understand them and does what he can to help. He generally thinks much more highly of others than he does of himself, which makes him great for helping others talk through their issues but absolutely awful for anyone trying to hit on him. He's pretty shy in regards to romance even if someone gets through to him that they actually mean it, but he takes that sort of thing very seriously and tries his best to be considerate of others' feelings when he's aware of them.
Abilities & Skills: No supernatural or superhuman abilities, but he's notably intelligent and has exceptional skills of observation and reasoning.
Inventory/Companions:
- His Monopad
- Kaede's music note hairclip
Choice: Vampire
Reason: Shuichi seems well-suited to vampirism given the way he relies on others, leeching off the confidence of bolder, more outgoing people like the monster races need to leech of the magic of witches and vampires feed on others' blood. He often seems to be hiding in the shadow of those people, only taking center stage when a murder occurs. At his darkest moments, his instinct is to shut himself away in the dark and just stay in bed for days.

Game Powers: Blessed katana; can "cut through lies" by dispelling illusions or compelling those cut by it to tell the truth.
Non-Powered Abilities: As the Ultimate Detective, he's extremely observant, and has a sharp mind and highly impressive deductive reasoning skills. He can also be fairly persuasive, and he's a decent liar when he absolutely needs to be.
Setting/Suitability: After the Killing Game, Shuichi is unfortunately plenty experienced in handling wild and difficult situations. He can kinda flounder at first, but once he gets into his groove he can be pretty pragmatic and handle whatever happens at least long enough to deal with whatever the situation is. As much as he's completely inexperienced with all things fantasy and wilderness, he'll manage alright by just paying attention and doing his best to learn what he has to to survive here. He's a bit introverted, but he does want to be able to rely on others and so he's good at cooperating with a group. And while he's not much of an "active" hero in the sense that most here are, more inclined to thinking and talking out issues, he's got a strong determination to survive and do what's right that will help him adapt to these more foreign experiences.
Coming straight off the end of the game, his greatest struggle for a while is likely going to be coming to terms with the reality of the situation here. He's going to stress quite a bit over what's real and if this is more "fiction" and whether or not he's dead after all. He'll probably also backslide a little in the progress he's made in coming out of his shell, as so much of that was built around having the support of his friends and here he'll be suddenly once again alone and surrounded by strangers. He might take a while to warm up to the others, but he'll manage given enough time.

Your character's inner child has been separated from your character into its own individual entity by a powerful spirit, and your character can speak to them through the game's magic mirror network. The child has been commanded to listen in silence, and in an ultimate test of self-awareness, your character has been told they must talk to them and pass them wisdom and emotional honesty they've gained through life experience. Every time you character lies or is otherwise insincere about something from their adult life, they get zapped with a painful magical shock from the spirit.
[Well. This is...weird. But everything here is. He's just still getting used to it.]
I'm...not really sure how relevant anything I have to say will really be to you. I guess it kind of depends on whether you're me, or...well, the other option.
[The "him" that supposedly came before, if that's even true to begin with. He doesn't know. He also doesn't know how this magic works, if this is more of a metaphorical thing or what.
He's probably overthinking this.]
Right. [He sighs, pausing to collect his thoughts.] So...I guess the best advice I can give is the advice my friends gave me.
[All the best "wisdom" he's gained has come from them, after all.]
Don't look away from the truth. Whatever happens...whatever life you're leading. You can't live in fear of what might happen. All you can do is move forward.
[He's not sure how applicable Kaede's words are to anyone not in his situation, but...well, they matter too much to him to stress over that. And if there's anything he needed to hear back before everything that happened -- if that time theoretically actually existed -- then it's this.
And Kaito... That one's still pretty fresh. It aches a little to think on, but he manages a slight smile. Kaito would rather he stayed positive and hung onto those ideals of his rather than mourning.]
And nothing is impossible. Just don't give up. If you have people you can rely on, then you can do anything. Just believe in that. In them.
